Tourism sector go on strike in Iraqi Kurdistan

Association of hotels, restaurants and tourism had voted in favour of strike action in Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, protesting the high electricity prices, the inefficient tax systems, Retirement Law, and Social Affairs.

 

The Chairman of the association, Hersh Ahmed, announced the news in press conference in Erbil on Tuesday.

 

“Some Hotels had to pay more than 12.000 US Dollar for Electricity bills, for four months supply” said Hersh Ahmed, “Taxes on Resort are high and inefficient, because the Government withhold taxes throughout the year, while resorts works only in summer” .

 

Hersh Ahmed pointed out that 8 Hotels have been shut down so far,  and warned that if their demands  are not met before 8th of March, all member Hotels, Restaurants and Resorts will close down and boycott Newroz.
