Snowfall blocks trade movement between Kurdistan and Iran

Sunday, 19 February 2012

Trade exchange movements on the Haji Omaran border crossing between Kurdistan and neighboring Iran have stopped due to heavy snowfall overnight, officials said today.

A wave of rain and snow swept across the semi-autonomous Kurdish region from Saturday morning, with snowfall amounting to about 20cm in some areas.

Director of the Haji Omaran border crossing Massoud Ahmed said: “Trade movements between the region and Iran have come to a halt… There has been really heavy snow on the Iranian side particularly and the trucks can't move on the roads.”

Snow removal teams have been working on clearing up the roads since yesterday but that may not resolve the issue today as the problem is mainly on the Iranian side, said Ahmed.
